Once you have run your website you start feeling curiosity about its popularity. You need to monitor the traffic of your website to know how many times it has been visited, what the time taken by the visitor to stay on it, which pages they visited the most, what time of the day it gets more traffic and what is the order of visited pages. After getting this information you will be able to improve your website. Visitors of your websites can be monitored in a number of ways. Some of them are discussed in this article.

A number of techniques are used to monitor the website. The number of hits that a web page generates is recorded in the web server log file. A web page generates one hit when it is visited once. If the web page has images than the number of hits on the images also counted as hits to web page. So you can monitor your website with the help of number of hits. Tracking applications is another way to monitor your website. A small piece of hyper Text Markup Language ( HTML) code is added by these tracking applications. This HTML is added to all the pages of website. The structure of the text on website is created by markup language. Another way to monitor website is the packet sniffer. It starts by intercepting packets from a network. A specific format of data units are used in a packet as opposed to bytes. The bitrate of a network is more efficiently distributed by packets. Information contained in a packet can also be analyzed by a packet sniffer. It completes the task by intercepting information from network. Only a computer is required to do so. A monitoring port is used to analyze all packets on a network with Local Area Network (LAN). On the other hand, packets on a single channel are possible to be analyzed with a wireless network.

Packet sniffers not only monitor the web pages but can also uncover the problems in a network. Packet snickers also alert the network supervisor if there is any attempt to hack the network. It collects proprietary information from other networks, trouble shoots the common problems faced by network and fit routs the undesirable content. Packet sniffers can also be used for gathering data about website’s traffic. By looking at the pages of your referrer you can accurately identify the source of arrival of your visitors. Visitors usually arrive from another website which has link to your website, from a search engine result page and directly from browser launch. Referral data is the best source of information as it let you know about the keywords which are frequently used at your website and search engines. You can make more targeted and meaningful keywords with this data. You can refine existing keywords as well and send your website to some new search engines and directories.

There are a lot of benefits of monitoring web traffic. Businesses can use this data to improve their website by making it more appealing and eye catching. Web traffic monitoring enables the advertisers to know which websites to place their ads on. It helps businesses to implement innovative marketing strategies for their website. So the traffic monitoring tools are crucial for the success of your online business.
